Infusions that help you relax

Stress is one of the great evils of our time. Its causes are varied, although it is true that work is usually a related reason. Different specialized sources indicate that 3 out of 10 Spaniards suffer from constant stress at work.

Unfortunately, the roots of the stress problem cannot be solved with an infusion, but its symptoms can be relieved. The properties of certain plants can promote relaxation, induce calmness, improve our mood and even relieve insomnia.

Today we present a selection of classic infusions that relax and others less known by the general public but that we recommend you try. They are effective and, in addition, a true caress for the palate.

A selection of infusions to relax

Stress, worry and anxiety influence our ability to slow down and relax. These discomforts are expressed in different ways in different people, whether through migraines, insomnia, muscle contractures or anxiety, for example.

Some leaves, roots and fruits can promote relaxation thanks to their anti-inflammatory, tranquilizing, muscle relaxant and sleeping properties. Let’s meet them.

Lime infusion

The linden plant is recognized for its anxiolytic and sedative effect. In fact, its infusion has been used for many years in natural medicine to relieve nervous and panic attacks, as well as problems falling asleep.

Prepare it by infusing two tablespoons of tila flowers for every liter of water. Heat the water and when it comes to a boil, turn off the heat and let stand for five minutes before straining and serving. We recommend drinking it an hour before going to sleep to take advantage of its relaxing potential.

Chamomile infusion

Known for relieving digestive discomfort, chamomile reduces stress-related hormones, promoting sleep and anxiety relief. On the other hand, it has anti-inflammatory effects that help treat headaches and muscle contractures.

In addition, alternative medicine has used chamomile tea as an antidepressant and sedative. This would be due to its content of apigenin, a flavonoid that would act to reduce depression and improve problems such as insomnia.

Prepare your chamomile infusion by steeping a couple of teaspoons of flowers in water at 85°C for about 6 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey if you wish.

Valerian infusion

Valerian is a plant belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family that is commonly used to make drugs that balance the nervous system. This is due to its calming effects that, among other uses, help fight insomnia.

A study noted that valerian root extracts induce sleep and improve its quality. Therefore, if you suffer from insomnia due to stress, you may want to try drinking a hot cup of valerian.

To do this, add 5 valerian leaves per cup of boiling water and, after letting it infuse for 5 minutes, drink it.

Lemon balm infusion

Ayurvedic medicine has advised taking lemon balm to relieve nervousness for hundreds of years. In fact, this plant of European origin is known as “the calming plant” and its infusion is often drunk to help you fall asleep.

As always, you can choose to infuse bags or leaves in bulk. In this case, add about 5 g of lemon balm per cup of hot water and let stand for about 8 minutes before straining.

Passionflower infusion

An article supports the traditional use of passionflower tea to relieve anxiety, stress, and sleep problems.

Preparing the infusion is as easy as dissolving passionflower tincture in hot water. As it is a tincture and not roots, flowers or leaves, it is not necessary to boil the water or let it rest.

Kava infusion

You probably haven’t heard of kava before. This plant is of Asian origin, specifically from Polynesia. Related to the pepper tree, kava or kawa-kawa, with the scientific name Piper methysticum, is highly valued in the East as it has anesthetic and sedative properties.

Traditionally, Pacific Islanders have used it to induce a state of relaxation in their ceremonies.

Research has found that people diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder who used kava over a period of time had reduced symptoms compared to a group given a placebo.

Although studies on kawa-kawa have yielded positive results in terms of stress management and relaxation achievement, there are still doubts regarding its use by people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases and its dosage. For this reason, we recommend that you consult your doctor before ingesting this infusion.

Hop infusion

While hops are one of the main ingredients in beer, they also have proven sedative properties. It can be highly recommended to drink this infusion in case of extreme alertness and anxiety.

Infuse 2 tablespoons of hop flowers (fresh or dried) for every 250 ml of boiled water, let rest for 10 minutes, strain and enjoy.

Now that you know the best infusions for relaxation, help yourself to disconnect, enjoy your free time better and sleep like a baby (or better yet).
