Sugar-Lowering Teas: Fighting Diabetes

Scientists have excellent news for the global tealovers community : our favorite drink also works to prevent diabetes . If you take into account that in Chile every 100 people, 12 suffer from diabetes , continuing to drink tea is a super healthy option for you and your family.

The studies refer to Type 2 Diabetes, which occurs in adults (although now there are cases of this type of diabetes in children) and which is due to the body’s failure to regulate blood glucose.

Among the studies carried out, one stands out in which, using rats, they managed to significantly reduce blood glucose levels after drinking black tea and that it could actually cure rats with diabetes.

One detail that all the studies mention is that these results are obtained with certain teas and infusions, but when milk is added, the effects are not as significant.

Uncover Happiness… or Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is related to obesity, poor diet and lack of physical activity. The western lifestyle and especially its food rich in fats and sugars has made diabetes an epidemic for more than 50 years. In fact, in the last year the number of people with diabetes has almost doubled. We all have friends or family members who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes!

The World Health Organization has blamed soft drinks such as Coca Cola and sugary juices in general for this increase in people with diabetes. It has initiated a plan to re-educate consumers in order to get them to give up sugar.

And now, to win the battle against diabetes, we will tell you what are the teas that prevent it by lowering blood sugar.

Green tea to lower sugar

In 2013, “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” published a study that looked at 17 clinical trials to assess the effect of green tea on glucose control. The researchers found that drinking green tea significantly lowered fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c , a protein that carries glucose in the blood. HbA1c is a useful indicator of consistent blood sugar control and is routinely measured in people with diabetes to ensure their blood sugar is properly managed.

It is not the most drunk tea in the world for a reason: it has many more positive effects on your health than you can imagine. A quality green tea , well prepared , alone or with lemon verbena , lime and ginger , hot or cold, can be the key to a healthy life.

Black tea

Like green tea, black tea lowers blood sugar. The researchers examined the effects in healthy adults, who drank black tea for 12 weeks and had their glucose and fat (cholesterol and triglyceride) levels tested compared to baseline. Black tea lowered blood sugar by 18%b which the researchers found was very significant. They saw a significant reduction in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol (known as “bad cholesterol”).

Oolong tea

The so-called blue tea (which is not blue) or oolong tea is an intermediate tea between green and black and has many proven health benefits . And now scientists have been able to observe that oolong tea also lowers blood sugar levels . But unlike the previous teas, the effect of oolong is only seen in patients suffering from diabetes. So if you are diabetic or diabetic you already have one more weapon to beat it.

Control your blood sugar

Type 2 diabetes is the most frequent and can affect any age, but it is more common after the age of 35. The classic symptoms are excessive thirst, frequent urination, and constant hunger. Even if you are in good health, doctors advise that you have checkups once a year. Surely they will ask you for a blood glucose test, do not stop doing it!

In the meantime, eliminating sugary drinks and adding sugar to tea is already an important step. Enjoy the best flavors with the certainty that they do you good.
